Forty-four years ago, a beloved wintertime tradition began. Armed with a garden hose and red goose-down parka, the head teacher of tiny Kelly Elementary set out to build the students an ice rink.
That teacher, my grandfather Ken, built the ice rink every winter until he was in his mid-80s. When he couldn’t manage it solo, my father Dan — the subsequent head teacher stepped up to help. Together, they stewarded this annual project for nearly four decades.
My father and grandfather both passed away recently, and the space they left behind has given me new perspective. I’ve begun to understand that things like the ice rink are much more than a charming wintry pastime — they’re the acts and gifts that build true and lasting community.
A thriving community is strongest and most vibrant when everyone shares what they can. This lies at the heart of how JHStyle Magazine tells stories — exploring and highlighting the contributions of a constellation of community members. From artists and athletes to scientists and entrepreneurs, these stories demonstrate how inspiring people are woven into the fabric of who we, collectively, are.
I am honored to step into the role of editor for this remarkable publication; grateful for the opportunity to showcase my astonishing neighbors, as well as offer guests a glimpse into what makes Jackson Hole a truly inimitable place.
Our character is unquestionably enhanced by our local athletes who push boundaries, achieve world-class accolades. Likewise, it’s enriched by the creative souls who bring us extraordinary music, books, art, photography and food. But just as much as the high-profile achievements and excellence define our community, so do the subtler moments. The folks of all ages who continue to build, create, connect and give — even when the cameras aren’t looking. Our everyday ethos.
In that spirit, I extend a heartfelt invitation to you: turn the page and get a deeper look into all that makes Jackson Hole so wonderful. Connect to the mountains, revel in the snow. Stand in awe of the wildlife and landscape. Get to know some of the passionate and determined people who make the community all that it is.
And as you experience Jackson Hole this winter, it is my sincere hope that what you’ve discovered in these pages will enhance your journey, no matter how lengthy or brief it may be. Because the magic really is everywhere.
Even in a tiny neighborhood ice rink.
