Rodeo has been embedded in Jackson Hole’s Wild West culture since settlers first arrived, and a vacation to the area wouldn’t be complete without a visit to this iconic summer event. An unforgettable way to experience Western heritage, the Jackson Hole Rodeo has become a signature town event, entertaining families multiple nights a week throughout the summer.

These action-packed competitions are a fundamental part of the area’s history. The town’s first “genuine” rodeo was implemented in 1911, even before the incorporation of the town in 1914. The event went through plenty of changes over the years since, but dedicated cowboys and cowgirls have worked to keep the long-standing tradition alive. Today, the Jack- son Hole Rodeo is run by the Wilson family, who are descendants of one of the first settlers of the town. Rodeo runs three generations deep for the Wilsons, as many of the men and women in the family have competed professionally over the past decades.

Held at the Teton County Fairgrounds, the Teton Range makes for a striking backdrop to this annual celebration. Jackson’s rodeo is among the earliest and longest-running events of Wyoming’s rodeo season. See a variety of roughstock events, including bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and bull riding, where a contestant’s score is equally dependent upon his performance and the animal’s effort. Timed events include steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, barrel racing and steer roping. Spectators can learn the fundamentals of these events and how they are scored ahead of time at JHRodeo.com/rodeo-101/.
