Behind the Pages: Caleigh Smith
18 Nov 2025
When she’s not busy saving lives, she’s crafting stories that reveal the soul of Jackson Hole
Writer Caleigh Smith brings a rare blend of grit, curiosity, and mountain-born perspective to every story she touches. Last edition, she profiled celebrated mountain athlete Kelly Halpin, honored the enduring legacy of Grizzly 399, and captured the spirit of the new Horseshoe Music Festival. For the upcoming winter issue, she’s diving into an equally dynamic lineup: how local architects balance competing influences, a behind-the-scenes look at the new Refillery Barn in Teton Valley, and the role yoga and mindful movement play in keeping Jackson Hole healthy.
Originally from Carbondale, Colorado, Caleigh studied at Colorado College, where she designed her own major in ecological and environmental journalism — naturally. She’s spent the last six years in Jackson, balancing her work as a full-time firefighter/paramedic for Jackson Hole Fire/EMS with writing for JHStyle, all while squeezing in as much rock climbing, dirt biking, skiing, rafting, running, hiking and general frolicking as the days allow.
We caught up with Caleigh for a Q&A on her exceptional work this season, the stories that move her, and the mountain lifestyle that fuels her through the winter months.
What was your favorite part of contributing to the 25/26 Winter Edition of JHStyle?
I always love the challenge that comes with a good theme as well as the freedom that our editor, Melissa, gives us in our pitches.

During cold months, what's your go-to beverage to warm up?
Mulled wine or a nice peppermint tea with milk and honey.
What's the perfect wintertime meal?
Anything gnocchi.
What's your favorite part of winter? And what's just the worst?
Snow sports! The worst is the shorter daylight hours.
When it's time to turn on some music and get to writing, what's on your playlist?
I love music. Like... more than anything. I have a different playlist for every different mood and activity.

Chilly temps, wind, snow... what wintertime wardrobe items would you perish without?
My flylow mittens and muck boots.
Describe your ideal winter day.
Waking up to fresh coffee with honey and cream, and trucking out with my snow bike to Togwotee or the Big Holes or going out for a big side country day at The Village, followed by a drink wtih friends and a yummy warm meal.
Where's your favorite spot to write? Why?
I love going to Cafe Jackson Hole or Snake River Roaster's. I do also do a significant amount of writing at the fire department.

If you could enjoy a fireside chat with one writer — dead or alive — who would it be and why?
Joan Didion.
If someone is looking for a great book to add to their winter reading list, what would you recommend?
"Deep Survival" by Lawrence Gonzales
