Waiting on Winter? Five Ways to Enjoy the Tetons While Ski Season Takes Its Time

26 Dec 2025

Sure, winter’s running late, but Jackson Hole still has plenty to offer

Winter/Spring 2026

Some winters arrive with a bang. Others take their time. (Unfortunately.)

If you’ve been staring at rain instead of snow and wondering when ski season is going to get serious, you’re not alone. Fortunately, Jackson Hole offers plenty of ways to stay inspired, entertained, and connected to the mountains—even while we wait for winter to fully settle in.

Here are a few ways to make the most of this in-between season.

Catch a Show or Take a Class at the Center for the Arts

The Center for the Arts is one of the valley’s most vibrant gathering places, especially when outdoor plans are on pause. From live performances and concerts to film screenings and talks, there’s always something happening on its stages.

On January 6th, the Center is hosting the world premiere of the new documentary film 399 Forever. This documentary that follows passionate wildlife guides and photographers who have dedicated their lives to tracking, teaching, and protecting Grizzly 399, the world’s most famous bear.

At the end of the month, on the 31st, catch Nashville-based, Oregon-born Mat Kearney on his Acoustic Trio Tour. (We suggest snagging tickets well in advance; this stellar performance is likely to sell out quickly!)

It’s also home to several outstanding nonprofit organizations offering classes and workshops. Whether you’re curious about dance, visual art, or creative expression of all kinds, groups like Dancer's Workshop and Art Association of Jackson Hole provide opportunities to learn something new, meet people, and stay creatively engaged through the winter months.

Explore the Wild Side With a Wildlife Safari

Even without fresh snow, the valley’s wildlife activity is anything but quiet. A guided safari with EcoTour Adventures offers the chance to explore Jackson Hole’s wild backyard alongside knowledgeable naturalists who know exactly where to look—and what stories to tell.

Winter wildlife viewing provides a unique perspective on the ecosystem, from migrating herds to elusive predators, all set against a dramatic seasonal landscape that feels very different from peak summer. Explore from the comfort of a van with spacious windows, dive deeper on a snowshoe-powered adventure, or make a day of both!

Immerse Yourself in Wildlife Art and Culture

Perched above the National Elk Refuge, the National Museum of Wildlife Art offers one of the most compelling indoor experiences in the region. Its permanent collection showcases some of the world’s finest wildlife art, spanning centuries and styles. This family-friendly museum offers plenty to explore and a kids' gallery with hands-on fun galore. Palate, the museum's cafe, is well worth a visit for lunch; tuck into regionally-inspired fare like a bison gyro or a trout po' boy while enjoying sweeping views of the Elk Refuge below.

In addition to the galleries, the museum regularly hosts special programs, lectures, and events, making it well worth checking the calendar for something new or seasonal.

See the Tetons From Above on a Scenic Flight

If you’re missing the thrill of being out in the mountains, a scenic flight with Teton Aviation offers a breathtaking reminder of why winter anticipation is worth it.

Soaring over the Tetons provides a dramatic, unforgettable perspective—one that can reignite excitement for the ski days still to come and deepen appreciation for the landscape in any season.

Perhaps learning to fly your own aircraft is on your 2026 To Do list? Teton Aviation has you covered there, too; their pilot program is one of the best in the country. Start with an introductory flight—designed to take an aspiring pilot aloft for a brief flight with one of their highly experienced instructors. Following the flight, sit down with your instructor to review the program and the FAA requirements for obtaining your Private Pilot Certificate. It's the perfect way to take flight on your own exciting adventure!

Finding Joy in the In-Between

Winter in Jackson Hole doesn’t always follow the script, but that’s part of living here. While we wait for colder temperatures and deeper snowpacks, these experiences offer meaningful ways to stay connected to the valley, the mountains, and each other.

When winter finally arrives in full force, you’ll be ready. Until then, there’s still plenty to explore.
