Fly fishing, crisp mountain rivers, gazpacho — all part of summer's magic for David Porter
Summer/Fall 2026
You’ve read their stories—now meet the people behind the words. We asked our JHStyle writers to tell us what inspires them, where they go for a perfect day in Jackson Hole, and what they’re looking forward to most this summer in a one-of-a-kind mountain town.
Readers will recognize David's name from previous contributions to JHStyle, including a thoughtful profile of celebrated photographer Jon Stuart, a peek into the studio of local artist Ben Roth, and captured the adventures of climbing guide and photographer David Bowers. In the upcoming summer edition, he explores the origins and philosophy behind JH Still Works, and the tireless advocacy of immigration attorney Rosie Read. In the meantime, we checked in to find out what his perfect summer day includes, some important gear advice, and where you're likely to find him casting to trout.

What's a perfect summer day, start to finish?
Wake up around 6:30 and eat breakfast. Drink coffee while driving into the hinterlands to fly fish. Wade through and stand in cold, moving water while casting dry flies. To catch fish is the bonus. Saunter home slowly and watch the clouds. Dinner outside on the deck as light fades.
What's something you think people don't understand about living in the mountains?
Like Shakespeare wrote, "Summer's lease hath all too short a date." It's short and glorious at high elevation. If you're going to be outside in the summer, by god you'd better carry a jacket because it can turn incredibly cold in an instant.
What's one thing you'll always say yes to in the summer?
Floating any body of water

Go-to trail snack?
Beef jerky
Favorite post-adventure beverage?
Iced tea, something that betrays my senescence
What meal absolutely screams "summer" to you?
Gazpacho and crusty bread
Flip-flops or Chacos? (Or something else entirely?)
I'm a Chacos person. Losing a sandal in a river is a drag, and Chacos tend to stay attached.

Where do you go when you need to reset?
Just about any place in the Greys River drainage
What's inspiring you this season?
As we head from spring to summer, I'm loving the regular snow storms replenishing the surrounding mountain ranges.
What's something you're loving right now? (Book, podcast, tv series, anything!) Why?
I've been watching the original Twin Peaks with my wife and daughter. What a wild ride! Part gruesome crime thriller, part Soap Opera, part farce. There's something for everyone, and it's so artistic.
